A Fort Worth police pursuit ended shortly before a driver jumped off a highway overpass Friday afternoon at Haltom Road and Loop 820, officials said.

Police initially responded to a report of a stolen vehicle at a gas station in the 2500 block of Northeast 28th Street around 2:30 p.m., according to a statement. Officers saw the vehicle and tried to make a traffic stop, but the vehicle failed to yield and police began to pursue it.

During the chase, police learned the driver of the vehicle was a relative of the vehicle’s owner and was suicidal, according to the statement. Because of this, officers stopped chasing the vehicle.

Moments after the pursuit ended, officers saw the vehicle stop on the Haltom Road overpass above Loop 820, according to the statement. Police then tried to make a felony stop, but the vehicle was unoccupied at that point.

A passer-by told police he thought he saw the driver of the vehicle jump off the bridge, officials said. When officers looked over the edge, they saw the driver lying on the ground near the shoulder of the highway.

Officers provided medical treatment and the driver was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

If you or a loved one is experiencing a crisis or suicidal thoughts, there is help available. Call or text the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988.
