5-year-old boy killed, man injured in Fort Worth crash between train and car
A 5-year-old boy was killed and a man was injured when a train collided with their vehicle on Wednesday in Fort Worth, police said.
Officers responded to an area near Elliot Reeder Road and Colony Court, near the line between Haltom City and Fort Worth, about 3:45 p.m. and found the vehicle, according to the statement.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the adult driver attempted to pass an activated train barricade at a railroad crossing, and the train hit the vehicle, police said.
The child was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as 5-year-old Emilio Jacobi Martinez. He died from blunt force injuries.
The man, who is related to the child, was taken to a nearby hospital in unknown condition, officials said.
A Trinity Railway Express commuter train was involved in the crash. Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) and Trinity Metro sent an alert saying that bus shuttles would transport TRE passengers between the Trinity Lakes and Fort Worth Central stations.
The train tracks were cleared about 10 p.m., and TRE trains began resuming normal operations, officials said.
