The Fort Worth City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved renaming the police department’s South Patrol Division headquarters to honor a fallen officer.

Sgt. Billy Randolph, 56, was killed last year after being hit by a drunk driver as he stood outside his vehicle at the scene of an 18-wheeler crash on Interstate 35W and Sycamore School Road, the Star-Telegram previously reported.

Randolph spent his entire 29-year law enforcement career with the Fort Worth Police Department. At the time of his death, then-police Chief Neil Noakes described Randolph as “one of the hardest-working people I’ve ever been around.”

“Sgt. Randolph’s unwavering commitment to public safety, his integrity, and his compassion left an enduring impact on those he served with and the citizens he protected,” the resolution reads. The name change honors Randolph’s “dedicated service, leadership and sacrifice” that “exemplify the highest standards” of the department.

Effective immediately, the division headquarters will be known as the Billy Randolph South Division Headquarters, according to the resolution.
