The nearly 1,900 sworn officers of the Fort Worth Police Department have a new leader — at least temporarily.
The Fort Worth City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to make current executive deputy chief Robert Alldredge interim chief while the city tries to find a replacement for retiring police chief Neil Noakes.
Alldredge has been with the department since 1999, and worked his way up from patrol officer to his current position where he oversees department finances and training.
Alldredge is also a regular fixture at City Council work sessions, where he’s often called upon to brief the council on department updates.
Council members praised Alldredge’s appointment citing his integrity and professionalism.
“You’ll need all that in dealing with the most challenging of issues that come at us as a city and as a police department,” said District 2 council member Carlos Flores.
Several council members took time Tuesday to praise Chief Noakes for his 25 years of service to the department and the city.
“You really do have a servant’s heart, and thank you so much for loaning that to the city of Fort Worth,” said District 7 council member Macy Hill.
The city put out a job posting for a new chief in early May, and plans to whittle down the list of applicants to a small group of finalists by early July, according to a city report.
The city then plans to have a public forum with the finalists in July before selecting the candidate in August.
The City Council will then vote on the finalist in September.
