Fort Worth city leaders have cleared the way for new commercial and residential development a short stroll from Dickies Arena.

City council voted unanimously Tuesday night to rezone two industrially-labeled plots of land at the southern end of Montgomery Street, permitting hotels, apartments, breweries, distilleries and wineries, among other commercial uses.

One of the two adjacent sites, at 2601 Montgomery, currently is home to the eponymous Montgomery Street Antique Mall; neither the developer, Phoenix Property Co., nor the lot’s current owners commented on the mall’s future. The Dallas-based firm, which manages mixed-used developments across the country, has yet to offer many concrete details about what it envisions for the area.

The go-ahead coincides with a city hall push to jump start activity along the corridor. City council members in mid-February unanimously agreed to begin the months-long process of redesignating 83.7 acres of industrially-zoned land along a half-mile stretch of Montgomery for commercial use.

The strand, linking Dickies Arena to Interstate 30, is a medley of vacant lots and unrelated businesses, including boot stores and the Vending Nut Co., a local dry fruit distributor.

Montgomery stretches as far north as West 7th Street, stitching together these businesses with the Amon Carter Museum of American Art and the UNT Health Science Center.
