Man accused of DWI in fatal Fort Worth highway crash
A pickup driver who crashed into one of two disabled cars and killed a motorist early Monday was in custody Tuesday, accused of driving while intoxicated, police said.
Police identified the suspect as Jose Calderon-Vigil, 30, of Fort Worth.
Calderon-Vigil is expected to be charged with intoxication manslaughter in the death of Jose Romero-Tapia, 31, of Fort Worth, authorities said.
Two other people were injured in the wreck shortly before 3 a.m. Monday in the 1600 block of Interstate 20 between McCart Avenue and Crowley Road.
According to police reports, a disabled white Nissan was parked in the safety zone of the entrance to westbound I-20 when a white Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Romero-Tapia rear-ended it.
The impact sent the Nissan into the entrance ramp, and the Cavalier spun around and wound up facing east in the westbound lanes, police said. A passenger in the Cavalier got out, but Romero-Tapia stayed inside, police said.
Seconds later, Calderon-Vigil was driving a 2007 Dodge Ram at high speed and smashed into the Cavalier, killing Romero-Tapia, police said.
Calderon-Vigil was arrested at the scene.
He has no previous drunken-driving arrests in Tarrant County, according to criminal court records.
