Woman, child die in W. Loop 820 crash in Fort Worth
An 81-year-old woman and a child were killed Monday afternoon when the car they were in was rear-ended by a truck after the car stopped because of a flat tire, according to authorities.
Officials with the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office identified the woman as Guadalupe Palacios of Corsicana. Palacios was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the website.
Six-year-old London Pena of Fort Worth died at 9:40 p.m. Monday at Cook Children’s Medical Center a few hours after the accident.
The car was in a southbound lane of West Loop 820 near White Settlement Road about 4:30 p.m.when it was hit, killing the woman and sending the girl to a hospital, said firefighter Kyle Clay, a Fort Worth Fire Department spokesman.
The girl was transported to Cook Children’s Medical Center in critical condition, said MedStar spokesman Matt Zavadsky.
Authorities did not release any information on the relationship between Palacios and Pena.
Two other adults were transported to hospitals with minor injuries, Zavadsky said.
Four people were in the car, a Chevy Malibu — the driver and another man in the front, and the child and woman in the back.
One of the adults in the car refused treatment.
Southbound lanes were shut down until 8:45 p.m., according to police. Northbound lanes were open but backed up during the evening commute.
