Part of Fort Worth ZIP 76133 to be sprayed for mosquitoes
Neighborhoods around the triangle created by McCart Avenue, Altamesa Boulevard and Westcreek Drive in far south Fort Worth will be sprayed for mosquitoes Friday night, the city has announced.
Four mosquito samples taken at a testing site at Fire Station 29 in the 6400 block of Westcreek Drive tested positive for the West Nile virus.
Spraying of the area, which is a portion of ZIP code 76133, will be from 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Saturday, weather permitting. If there is a weather delay, spraying will begin Saturday night, according to a news release.
The concentration of pesticides to be sprayed is less than that found in over-the-counter products, the news release said.
Other cities in North Texas, including Dallas, regularly spray to control mosquito populations. Fort Worth sprays infrequently.
Signs went up in the Westcreek neighborhood this week about the positive tests, and a meeting was held Wednesday night to discuss options, WFAA reported.
Kamethia Perez said the insects seem especially attracted to her husband.
“I would prefer to have them spray and get rid of the mosquitoes than not to spray,” Perez said. “We definitely don’t want to catch West Nile virus.”
She said with a baby at home, she’s particularly worried.
“We are very concerned,” she said. “We have a 10-month-old that we try to get him out as much as possible, but I don’t know. It’s just dangerous.”
So far there have been no human cases of West Nile virus in Tarrant County this year. One has been reported in Dallas County.
The city news release asked “all residents to remain vigilant in their efforts to reduce exposure and take actions in reducing or eliminating mosquito breeding sites on your property.”
