18 people at Fort Worth bakery hospitalized for carbon monoxide poisoning, officials say
Employees from a Fort Worth bakery are being medically evaluated Thursday after they were exposed to carbon monoxide, officials said.
Firefighters responded to the Guanajuato Bakery at 3301 E. Belknap St. shortly after 10:30 a.m. for a carbon monoxide call, according to Fort Worth Fire Department records.
MedStar and fire department personnel were at the scene treating the victims. A spokesperson for MedStar told the Star-Telegram shortly after 12:30 p.m. that they had evaluated 18 people, and they were all sent to John Peter Smith Hospital in good condition for further treatment.
Craig Trojacek, a fire department spokesperson, said he understands all the victims are employees of the bakery. No other businesses in the area were affected.
The cause is under investigation, Trojacek said. Bakery employees told him that some of them began having symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning Wednesday after a part was replaced on one of the ovens, but Trojacek said it’s still too soon to confirm that was the cause.
No one called 911 to report carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms until Thursday, Trojacek said. The gas to the building has been shut off, and firefighters are monitoring air quality at the location on a 15-minute rotation.
