Burglar bars block escape of 2 men injured in house fire in Fort Worth’s Como neighborhood
Two men are in critical condition after a house fire in Fort Worth’s Como neighborhood Tuesday night, officials said.
Firefighters responded to the 5600 block of Donnelly Avenue around 10:15 p.m. after someone called 911 saying they were trapped inside the house. The caller said he was trying to escape but couldn’t due to heavy fire and burglar bars on the window, Fort Worth Fire Department officials posted on social media.
When firefighters arrived they had to pull the burglar bars off a window to get the victim out, Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV reported. A second victim was found near the front door.
Both men were unconscious when they were pulled from the house, according to the fire department’s social media post.
The two victims were airlifted to Parkland Hospital in Dallas, where they were listed in critical condition.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Fire officials recommend residents make sure their smoke alarms are working properly and create an escape plan in case of a fire. They also say that it’s a good idea to keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and sleep with the bedroom door closed, as that may help slow the spread of flames.
