Fort Worth man accused of hiding gun, cleaning scene when toddler fatally shot 12-year-old
A 35-year-old man was arrested Monday in connection to the fatal shooting of 12-year-old Trey’Shawn Eunes, who Fort Worth police say was accidentally shot by a toddler.
Decarlos Jordan was arrested and faces a charge of tampering with and removing evidence from the shooting scene, which is a third-degree felony. Jordan is accused of hiding or discarding the handgun used in the shooting and cleaning the scene, according to an arrest warrant affidavit obtained by the Star-Telegram.
Surveillance video of a hallway reviewed by detectives showed Jordan taking the handgun, a rifle and other unidentified items from the room where Trey’Shawn was shot and mopping the hallway, police wrote in the affidavit. Additional video showed Jordan mopping up blood in the parking lot where the victim collapsed, police said.
Jordan was booked in the Tarrant County Jail and released on bond, according to jail records.
Trey’Shawn was at a Juneteenth barbecue with his father at a strip mall at 5504 Brentwood Stair Road on June 19, and was playing video games with a friend inside an office suite. That’s when investigators believe a 3-year-old boy picked up a gun and shot Trey’Shawn.
Trey’Shawn’s father, Jarvis Eunes, was at the party along with the toddler’s father and other friends, according to the affidavit. Jarvis Eunes was outside grilling, and the toddler, Trey’Shawn and the person he was playing the video game with were alone in a room when the shot was fired, police said.
Jarvis Eunes and the toddler’s father told police that they were outside when they heard a gunshot and saw Trey’Shawn run out holding his side, according to the affidavit. Trey’Shawn collapsed into his father’s arms.
His father carried Trey’Shawn to a car and took him to Cook Children’s Hospital, where he died. His mother, Lakesha Bay, told the Star-Telegram that Trey’Shawn was shot through his side, and the bullet went through his lung. She also said that police told her the gun was taken from the scene before officers arrived.
No arrests were made the night of the shooting.
In an interview with police, Jordan said he was in another room when he heard a “pop,” and then he ran into the room where the shooting occurred, according to the affidavit. He told police he picked up the handgun after the 3-year-old dropped it and that he put the gun in another room but doesn’t know what happened to it afterward.
Police found a fired 9mm shell casing but have not located the gun, according to the affidavit.
Community members gathered June 25 for a fundraiser for Trey’Shawn’s family at Daesy’s Tropical Sno in Arlington, arranged by the owner of the snow-cone shop and by some of the 12-year-old’s teachers from J.B. Little Elementary in Arlington.
“He really just liked to be friends with everybody,” Trey’Shawn’s mother told the Star-Telegram. “If there was a kid at the park being left out, he would be going to that one kid who wasn’t playing with anybody and bring that kid into the group. That’s the kind of person Trey’Shawn was. He loved to bring people together.”
