‘We’re human too’: Fort Worth drag performers targeted by protests vow to stay strong

Growing up in Nevada, Kiba Walker never saw anyone who was quite like him. Now, as a drag queen performing across Texas, the 28-year-old hopes to give LGBTQ+ youth an example of a queer person of color who unapologetically loves themselves.

In his persona as Salem Moon, Walker performs at shows, brunches, trivia nights and fundraisers. But recently, activists have shown up to protest the events, especially those that are open to families with children. Venues and performers now endure threats to their livelihoods and safety.

Walker and other performers worry what this means for young queer people in North Texas.

“I don’t understand how people can get away with telling kids who they can and can’t be,” Walker said. “And why they think that’s protecting them. Because ultimately it’s killing kids. It’s killing their spirits and killing their souls.”
