Firefighter injured while battling blaze at church in east Fort Worth, officials say
A firefighter battling a blaze at an abandoned church in east Fort Worth was injured when a wall collapsed on him, officials said.
Firefighters were dispatched to the 5900 block of Tension Drive around 2:20 a.m. Thursday. Heavy smoke and fire were already coming from the building when they arrived, fire department officials posted on social media.
About 20 minutes later, a mayday call indicating a firefighter needed immediate help was sent out, officials said. A firefighter had gotten trapped in a collapse at the back of the building.
Fellow firefighters moved the injured firefighter to safety within two minutes of the call, the post said. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Crews fought the blaze defensively for more than two hours, officials said. Around 100 firefighters rotated in and out and crews were on the scene for six hours.
Officials are investigating the cause of the fire, according to the post.
