These are Fort Worth’s most endangered buildings and places. Will we preserve them?
Historic Fort Worth released its 2023 most endangered places list Wednesday in a bid to draw attention to the need for the city to preserve its historic places.
Previous versions of the list brought attention for the need to revitalize the Fort Worth Stockyards, which is now one the city’s main tourist attractions.
This year’s list includes a number of buildings owned by the city and the Fort Worth school district, including the Fort Worth Community Arts Center and Farrington Field.
The city created task forces to figure out what to do with both buildings, with the arts center task force scheduled to present its findings to the new City Council in June.
Fort Worth has the second largest number of historic places in Texas, but has struggled in recent years to adequately staff the city department in charge of preserving them.
The 2022 list included the city’s historic preservation department, which at the time had one full time staff member.
However, things have improved in the year since with five full time staff members being added to help the city stay compatible with grant requirements that can net property owners a 25% rebate on work to preserve historic properties, said Justin Newhart, a manager in the city’s preservation and design department.
