The north and southbound express lanes of Interstate 35W were closed near Meacham Boulevard in Fort Worth because of a fatal accident Monday afternoon, authorities said.

A car broke apart when it was hit by an 18-wheeler carrying gravel in the southbound lanes, and part of the car hit other vehicles that were headed north, according to MedStar.

One person was pronounced dead and at least two other people were injured. Some of the patients were trapped in the wreckage, authorities said.

Traffic-camera images showed a large truck that was carrying gravel turned on its side.

The accident was reported about 12:40 p.m. All lanes were reopened later that afternoon.
