On Feb. 18, the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo will be held at the Cowtown Coliseum in the Fort Worth Stockyards.

The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo celebrates and honors Black cowboys and cowgirls’ contributions to building the west, according to the rodeo mission statement. This cultural event gives families the opportunity to enjoy and embrace the cowboy culture while being educated and entertained with reenactments, history highlights and western adventure.

Founder Lu Vason started the rodeo in 1984 and named it after Texas-born cowboy Bill Pickett who was the originator of rodeo steer wrestling, or bulldogging, which is still a central part of nearly every rodeo.

Tickets for two rodeo times, 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., can be bought on AXS and range from $15 to $55.
