Fort Worth Zoo welcomes baby giraffe duo to the savanna
Two male reticulated giraffe calves were born at the Fort Worth Zoo within less than two weeks of each other, according to a press release from the zoo.
Sherlock, standing 5 feet 10 inches tall, was born Oct. 26. Watson, at 6 feet 3 inches, made his appearance Nov. 6.
Reticulated giraffes are one of nine subspecies of giraffes and get their name from their distinctive rectangular markings. According to the online animal encyclopedia Animal Corner, male giraffes can grow up to 18 feet tall.
The subspecies is native to Somalia and is also called the Somali giraffe. Large numbers of them can also be found in Northern Kenya and they are the most common giraffe subspecies seen in zoos.
Giraffes at the Fort Worth Zoo live in the African Savanna habitat.
According to the press release, Sherlock and Watson are staying inside the barn and getting to know the other members of their herd. Once the weather gets warmer, they can start exploring outside.
Pele, a female giraffe, was born in June.
