Craving chicken and waffles? Try these Fort Worth restaurants

Let your taste buds rejoice in the sweet and savory since it is National Chicken and Waffles Day.

Although the origin of the delectable combination has been debated, there is no doubt it is a tasty meal.

One story of where the idea of chicken and waffles began goes back to 1930s Harlem in a restaurant called the Wells Supper Club. It was served between dinner and breakfast after jazz musicians finished their sets late at night and early in the morning.

However, be careful about pointing to the South as the origin of the meal. An NPR report years earlier touched a nerve of vociferous denials that the fried chicken and waffle combination came from the region. Although fried chicken is definitely a southern staple, there is scant evidence the sweet and savory combination started in the South.

If you have a craving for chicken and waffles in Fort Worth, here are some places in the area that do serve the tasty combination:

• The Cookshack, 500 University Dr., has it on the regular menu. The order includes three tenders (that you can try hot) and Belgian waffles sprinkled with powdered sugar and topped with maple syrup.
• Helen’s Hot Chicken, 2812 Horne St., on the corner at Camp Bowie Boulevard and Locke Avenue, is a Nashville spinoff from a soul food restaurant named Helen and John’s. Hot chicken and waffles is served on weekends.
• Ricky’s Hot Chicken, 3810 S. Cooper St. in Arlington, also serves chicken and waffles on the weekends.
