Cliburn amateur piano competition winners announced. Here’s who won.
The winners of the Eighth Cliburn International Amateur Piano Competition were announced Tuesday evening in Bass Performance Hall, according to a news release from The Cliburn.
Jon Lee, a 41-year-old software engineer from the United States, took home the first-place prize of $2,000. In his online Cliburn bio, he said the Cliburn Amateur is “a pinnacle in my journey.”
Michael Slavin, a 71-year-old retired neuro-ophthalmologist from the United States, came in second with a prize of $1,500. According to his online bio, Slavin began playing the piano at the age of 5. He also won second place in the 2016 Cliburn Amateur.
Xavier Aymonod, a 46-year-old marketing director in public transportation from France, took home the third-place prize of $1,000. Aymonod also won third place in the 2016 Cliburn Amateur, according to his online bio.
The competition ran from Oct. 12-18 in Fort Worth and featured 39 non-professional musicians from 16 countries, including Ukraine, South Korea and Mexico.
They were chosen in March 2020 from more than 200 applicants. The competition was originally scheduled for May 2020, but had to be postponed because of COVID-19.
The Cliburn amateur competition began in 1999 for non-professional pianists 35 and older and is held every four years.
