At least an inch of rain fell in some neighborhoods of Tarrant County on Wednesday, but the thunderstorm system has moved out of the area and headed northeast toward Oklahoma and Arkansas, the National Weather Service reported.

Parts of central Tarrant County received the most rain at 1.6 inches, said Matt Stalley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.

The official reading at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport was 0.92. That pushed the total since January to 36.50 inches, almost a half-inch more than the usual average for an entire year.

Abilene got 8.25 inches of rain, the wettest day for the city since record keeping began in 1885. The previous record was 6.54 inches on May 11, 1928.

The deluge caused street flooding in Abilene and led to a large number of water rescues.

“The cold front stalled out in the Abilene area and the front parked over there since Tuesday,” Stalley said. “Showers and storms kept developing along that line.”

Officials in Comanche County reported road closures because of high water from thunderstorms Wednesday morning. More than 31/2 inches had fallen in Comanche County.

Texas 6 near the DeLeon fairgrounds was impassable because of flooding, according to the weather service.

Rainfall totals ranged from 1 to 5 inches in several Oklahoma counties.

Thursday will return to typical July weather with sunny skies and a high in the low 90s and a heat index as high as 97, Stalley said.

Next week, we’ll get closer to 100-degree temperatures.
