This is the wettest August in Dallas-Fort Worth since record keeping began in 1899
This week’s rainfall total sets the record for the wettest August in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. A total of 10.38 inches of rain has been recorded with a little over a week to go.
The previous record was set in 1915 with 10.33 inches of rain, a gift from a powerful hurricane that hit Galveston.
The deluge from Sunday night throughTuesday pushed us over the top, the National Weather Service Fort Worth office said. This has been the wettest August since record keeping began in 1899.
This month’s rainfall totals just squeaked by the previous wettest August total in 1915. The top five wettest August’s since NWS record keeping began are:
- 2022- 10.38 inches
- 1915- 10.33 inches
- 1914- 9.02 inches
- 1970- 6.85 inches
- 1946- 6.84 inches
The average rainfall total for August is 2.18 inches and this month’s total has greatly surpassed that, said Sarah Barnes, meteorologist at NWS Fort Worth office.
Barnes said the record-setting rainfall total for August could continue as the month comes to a close.
August 2022 had already set a record for the second wettest 24-hour period in Dallas-Fort Worth history with 9.19 inches over Sunday and Monday. Only 1932 is higher for wettest 24-hour period with 9.57 inches of rain.
