There isn’t much that’s free nowadays, except if you stop by a comic book shop on Saturday.

Free Comic Book Day is a nationwide event that takes places on the first Saturday of May every year in which readers can pickup free issues. The event started in 2002 as a way to entice new readers to check out comics and to prove that there’s a book out there for everyone.

Only a select few comic books are free during the event, each one having “Free Comic Book Day” scrolled over the top of the cover. In total, 46 titles were chosen by retailers as free giveaways and it depends on each shop as to what they’ll have in stock.

However, readers can expect titles from Marvel, BOOM! Studios and Dark Horse Comics, over franchises including the Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Stranger Things.

It’s one of the biggest events in the comic book industry every year, with some shops throwing cosplay contests and offering big discounts alongside the freebies. Here’s where to stop by and pickup a free comic in Fort Worth:

Collected

Collected has plenty in store for fans on Saturday, including a new location just a few blocks from the previous spot.

Fans can pickup up to eight free comics during the event: three as complimentary, two more if you signup or are a member of their heroic rewards program, two additional for making an in-store purchase and one extra for showing up in costume.

The store will have a sidewalk sale going on for comics, graphic novels and Funko pops. Also, artist Ryan Palmer will be at the store selling prints from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Collected is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 2823 Alta Mere Drive.

Wild West Comics and Games

Wild West is giving fans a chance to pickup five free comic books if they bring canned food.

People can receive one extra comic book per canned food donation, up the three cans. That means readers can grab the two free complimentary issues and potentially get one to three more just by bringing a donation.

The canned food will go to an area nonprofit food bank, the store says.

Wild West Comics and Games is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 5429 S. Hulen St..

Y2Komics

One of Fort Worth’s longest running comic book shops is giving fans a chance to pickup four free comics.

Y2Komics will hand out additional free comics, alongside the two complimentary issues, if someone comes in costume and or mention’s their Facebook event posting. Alongside the freebies, readers can watch tabletop gamers play their annual Saturday matches.

Y2Komics is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 5276 Trail Lake Drive.

Fanboys Marketplace

Fanboys is participating in free comic book day, but the bigger celebration on Saturday is its two-year anniversary in Fort Worth.

To celebrate the anniversary, Fanboys has put together a plethora of special guests from voice actors to the actor who played the latest iteration of horror-icon, Pinhead, in Hellraiser: Judgment. Along with the special guests, there will be a Funko pop swap, toy show, prizes and Hot Wheels drag races.

Fanboys is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 6385 Camp Bowie Blvd.

Sci Fi Factory

Sci Fi Factory is another participant of free comic book day this year.

Alongside the freebies, there’s a buy two get one free sale on comic books at the store.

Sci Fi Factory is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at 6560 Lake Worth Blvd. unit 300.
