Missing kayaker found in Fort Worth river

The body of a missing kayaker was found Wednesday morning by a homeowner on the West Fork of the Trinity River, a short distance from where he went missing, a fire official said.

The homeowner called authorities about 8 a.m. Wednesday after finding the body in the water near the 4100 block of Idlewild Drive.

Fire Lt. Kyle Falkner said Wednesday that positive identification by the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office had not been made, but authorities were convinced that the man was the missing kayaker. Officials did not release the man’s name, but area television news reports identified him as Edgar Castro.

“He was found about a mile to a mile and a half from where he was last seen,” Falkner said.

A ruling on Castro’s death was pending an autopsy by the medical examiner’s office.

Castro and another man were kayaking on the West Fork near the Westworth Village-Fort Worth border. They ended up in the water shortly after 10 a.m. Saturday. Firefighters began searching Saturday morning with a dive team, along with Texas Department of Wildlife game wardens in boats.

Authorities and Castro’s friends and relatives searched for four days before he was found Wednesday morning.

Another man’s body was found Tuesday morning in the river, but authorities did not immediately release details on Wednesday. Firefighters got a call reporting the body in the West Fork of the Trinity about 11 a.m. Tuesday near Gateway Park in east Fort Worth.

Officials said the body, that of a man in his 50s, was taken to the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office for identification.
