Better have that heater ready! Wind chills in the teens predicted for North Texas
Winter has finally arrived in North Texas.
Cold fronts are in the forecast for the Dallas-Fort Worth area in the next few days, and an arctic front that arrives Thursday could bring wind chill values as low as 19, according to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.
“We are going to see a parade of fronts,” said meteorologist Daniel Huckaby with the NWS in Fort Worth on Wednesday. “It will be quite cold on Thursday.”
But first, a cold front arrived Wednesday in North Texas, bringing with it brisk and cooler conditions. The daytime high was about 58 degrees on Wednesday.
The arctic front arrives early Thursday with north winds of 15 to 25 mph with higher gusts.
Temperatures on Thursday will be in the 30s on a sunny day.
But meteorologists say north winds on Thursday will keep the wind chill values in the 20s and teens for much of North Texas, including Fort Worth.
North Texans will wake up on Friday morning to temperatures in the 20s. It will warm up to 58 on Friday, and North Texans get to have temperatures in the lower 70s on Saturday.
But another cold front will arrive late Saturday into early Sunday, bringing cooler temperatures back to North Texas. Isolated thunderstorms will be possible across portions of Central and East Texas Saturday and Saturday night. No severe weather is expected.
Cold weather precautions to protect your home
When there are freezing temperatures, the National Weather Service recommends taking cold weather precautions.
Those precautions include protecting your plumbing, plants and pets. Shut off sprinklers, and drip faucets to prevent pipes from freezing. Cover your plants, and make sure outdoor pets have shelter.
Also, check on the elderly or those fighting illness to make sure they are protected from the chilly temperatures.
