Woman believed to have drowned after intentionally driving into water in north Fort Worth
Firefighters worked Thursday afternoon to recover the body of a woman who was believed to have drowned after she intentionally drove her vehicle into the water at a rock quarry near the Trailwood neighborhood in north Fort Worth, authorities said.
Fort Worth police told WFAA-TV that they saw the woman drive into the water after officers responded to a call about her being in distress about 1 p.m. Thursday.
Fort Worth police, a fire department dive team and MedStar personnel responded to try to save the woman from the sinking vehicle in the 700 block of Riverflat Drive. A Careflite helicopter also was called to the scene.
The search turned into a recovery operation when authorities were unable to save the woman. Firefighters pulled a vehicle from the water about 5 p.m.
A MedStar spokesperson initially reported that two other people had been recovered from the water, but authorities later said the woman was the only person in the vehicle.
Crystal Thompson, who’s lived in the neighborhood since 2005 when it was first built, said she’s never heard of anything like the incident Thursday happening before.
When she first heard police sirens and a helicopter, Thompson said, she wasn’t sure if there was a police chase or a standoff in a nearby house. After staying in her house for an hour, she stepped outside to see several emergency vehicles at the scene.
She said despite discouragement from going in the quarry area situated south of the neighborhood, people have used the space to ride their ATVs or go fishing in the pond.
Thompson said the quarry area is hard to access and would be difficult for someone unfamiliar with the area to find a way inside.
