Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker tests positive for COVID-19

Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker has tested positive for COVID-19, according to a statement she posted to Twitter on Sunday.

Parker, who is fully vaccinated against COVID with the Pfizer vaccine, said in the statement she is “only experiencing mild symptoms.” Her husband, David Parker, tested positive Friday.

Parker said she will be isolating and working from home, following city guidelines to decide when she returns to the office.

She said she and her husband are both in good spirits and asked for prayers for a quick recovery.

Mayor pro tem Gyna Bivens will likely lead Tuesday’s city council work session and meeting although Parker plans to attend the meetings virtually, mayoral spokesperson Bethany Warner said. The council held a closed in-person meeting Tuesday, Oct. 5, but Parker since hasn’t had any in-person contact with city council members.

District 3 council member Michael Crain, who wasn’t at the Oct. 5 meeting but spent time with Parker later that day at the National Night Out, said he plans to get tested as a precaution. Crain said he’s fully vaccinated, and encouraged others to do so.

District 4 council member Cary Moon, who contracted COVID-19 in June 2020, said Parker’s diagnosis is a reminder the city isn’t out of the woods with the pandemic. He also encouraged Fort Worthians to get vaccinated, and offered prayers and well wishes to the mayor and her family.
