A man who refused to put down what an officer thought was a knife was shot early Tuesday by police in a south Fort Worth neighborhood, authorities said.

The man, shot in the arm, was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said. The object turned out to be an 11-inch barbecue fork with two tines, authorities said.

Officers were dispatched to a call about a prowler that turned into a call about a person with a knife shortly before 3:30 a.m. in the 1300 block of New York Avenue.

A resident called 911 to say that a man “armed with a large knife, was pounding at the front door.”

“The officer approached the male ordering him numerous times to ‘drop the knife’ at which time the suspect dropped to one knee,” said police Sgt. Steve Enright in a Tuesday news release. “The officer fired one shot wounding the suspect.”

The officer administered medical aid until paramedics arrived, police said.

The man, who police would not identify Tuesday, lives in the neighborhood, Enright said.

The officer, who has been with the department for two years, was wearing a body camera but did not have time to turn it on, police said. The shooting was captured on dash-cam video, police said.

The officer was placed on routine administrative leave, according to police.

Once criminal and administrative investigations are complete they will be turned over to the Tarrant County district attorney’s office for review and presentation to a grand jury.
