Texas drivers can renew expired licenses with Saturday appointments at some offices
Select Texas driver’s license offices will open on Saturday through the end of the year for license or identification card renewal or replacement.
Nearly 700,000 Texas drivers licenses or identification cards expired while drivers license offices were closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a new release from the Texas Department of Public Safety said. Appointments will be available except for the Nov. 28 Thanksgiving holiday. Appointments are scheduled to end on Dec. 19.
Some drivers license offices are remaining open on Saturday to give customers another option to renew or replace documents and to help reduce the backlog. The Fort Worth South office will be one of those participating in the Saturday schedule, according to the DPS website.
Participating drivers license offices will offer a limited number of Saturday appointments beginning on Oct. 3 to help Texans handle these specific transactions. The offices will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the release said.
An extension for expiration dates that was granted in response to COVID-19 remains in effect. The extension means that if your Texas Identification card, Texas driver license, commercial driver license or election identification certificate card expired on or after March 13, it falls under a covered period and will remain valid for 60 days after the DPS issues a public notice that the extension period has been lifted.
The extension was granted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This 60-day notice has not been issued, and Texans still have time to conduct their renewal transactions.
Since May, all services at Texas drivers license offices have been conducted by appointment only. DPS moved to appointments only to reduce the time Texans spend waiting in line. Customers can now book appointments for a specific day and time up to six months in advance. To schedule an appointment or check availability, visit the online appointment scheduler.
