Fort Worth Zoo named best in the country in USA Today poll
The Fort Worth Zoo was recently named the best zoo in the nation, according to a USA Today poll.
USA Today assembled a panel of industry experts who created a list of 20 zoos that excel in animal care and enrichment, while also creating interactions between animals and humans, according to a press release.
Once people across the country voted, the Fort Worth Zoo claimed the number one spot after finishing in the top five for the last four years, zoo spokesperson Avery Elander said.
“[Our staff has] always known how special the zoo is, but now the rest of the country gets to see that as well,” Elander said.
Ramona Bass, the long-time chairman of the board of directors, said in a press release that it’s the work of a dedicated staff and the support of guests that make the zoo special.
“Thank you to the many people all across the United States for casting your votes and once again showing your support for the Fort Worth Zoo,” Bass said. “We are humbled and thrilled by this honor.”
The recognition comes off the heels of an ongoing $100 million renovation project named A Wilder Vision, Elander said. The project is broken into four phases, with it being in its second phase named Elephant Springs, which will nearly triple the size of the elephant exhibit and add grass areas where they can roam.
The first phase, African Savannah, opened in April 2018 and provided an expanded exhibit for giraffes, rhinos, hippos and several bird species, Elander said.
The zoo is now open after temporarily closing because of the coronavirus pandemic. Tickets must be purchased online and guests must arrive at a set time of their choosing, Elander said. There are several safety guidelines in place as well, such as people 10 years and older must wear face coverings, social distancing must be maintained, and capacity is limited.
