Police seek driver who hit kids playing chicken on Fort Worth street

Police continued searching Monday for a hit-and-run driver who seriously injured three girls when he hit them with his vehicle as they were playing chicken in the middle of a residential street.

Authorities are looking for a white Ford Crown Victoria. They had no other description of the vehicle.

An African-American man and a Hispanic man were in the car when the vehicle struck the girls, ages 10, 11 and 14, on Sunday, authorities said. The girls remained in serious condition Monday at Cook Children’s Medical Center, a family member said.

Police did not release their names.

The 14-year-old suffered a concussion; the other two had a broken leg and a fractured knee, the teen’s father said Monday.

The accident call came into police about 2:35 a.m. Sunday in the 2900 block of Mississippi Avenue near Lowden Street.

The teen texted her father just minutes before the accident.

“Those were her friends and she was staying over with them,” said David Wiggins, the teen’s father. “She texted me just to check in. I don’t know if they were playing a game or not. The next thing I know, a friend of mine called me to say that my daughter was in the hospital.”

The Crown Victoria was northbound on Mississippi Avenue when the vehicle hit the kids and fled, police said.

“The three children were playing a game called ‘Chicken,’ which entails standing in the roadway and the first person to run when a car approaches is deemed the loser,” police Sgt. Steve Enright said in an email Monday. “All three children were in the roadway.”

Wiggins said Monday that he wasn’t sure what his daughter and the girls were doing in the street.

“It may have been just kids being kids,” he said. “I just want to find that driver and stop him from hurting someone else.”
