Second Tarrant County Jail inmate dies within one week, records show

Investigations are underway into the deaths of two Tarrant County Jail inmates who died within a week of each other, according to records and state officials.

Jason Glendon Martin, 40, died at 1:50 a.m. Wednesday, the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s office reported.

The cause of death is listed as pending.

The State Commission of Jail Standards confirmed it is investigating that death, along with the death of Javonte Lakendrick Myers, 28, who was pronounced dead in his cell at 4:50 p.m. Friday.

It is standard procedure for the commission to investigate in-custody deaths.

The Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday afternoon that just after 10 p.m., the man “experienced an unknown medical emergency and collapsed while walking through a housing pod.”

He was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital, where he died hours later.

The sheriff’s office said on Saturday that Myers died of natural causes. His autopsy is pending.

“The inmate was scheduled to be medically evaluated,” according to a statement released by the sheriff’s office on Saturday. “No foul play is suspected.”
