TCU moves classes online until April 3, extends spring break over coronavirus concerns
TCU is extending its spring break before all in-person classes will shift online over concerns of the coronavirus, the college announced Wednesday.
Spring break, originally set to end March 16, will continue through March 20, according to a news release posted on the TCU website. Students will then begin online classes from March 23-April 3.
Faculty members are reportedly using the longer spring break to prepare to move their classes online.
Additionally, the college has already increased its cleaning protocols across campus, a college spokesperson said.
TCU has joined more than 100 colleges across the country that have moved classes online in response to COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the new coronavirus. There were more than 125,000 cases across the globe as of Wednesday, including more than 1,200 in the U.S. and 21 in Texas, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
The college is enacting the change “due to rapid spread and unpredictability of the disease,” according to the message from the university.
“TCU’s highest priority is the health and well-being of our community and these measures are being put in place to secure that as best we can,” Chancellor Victor Boschini Jr. said in the release. “We have a responsibility to each other, our campus and the greater community to help ensure good health, decrease the potential impacts of COVID-19, and to prevent its exposure to vulnerable populations.”
Students who have been away from campus for spring break are asked to hold off on returning to campus until they receive further instruction, the release said. All large meetings, conferences and on-campus events are canceled through April 3, but TCU business operations will remain open the week of March 16, as well as March 23-April 3.
