Smoke fills 3 floors of downtown Fort Worth hotel; cause unknown

Smoke filled three floors of a downtown Fort Worth hotel Friday afternoon and authorities were unable to determine the cause.

Firefighters responded to the 429-room Sheraton in the 1700 block of Commerce Street after 3 p.m. Mike Drivdahl, a Fort Worth Fire Department spokesman, said any time there is smoke confirmed in a high-rise downtown building they will initiate a second alarm, bringing more firefighters and firetrucks.

The hotel was evacuated and firefighters cleared the building of smoke, Drivdahl said. There was a smoky smell in the building temporarily, he said, but there was no lingering damage.

He said on Saturday the fire department was unable to conclude what led to the smoke. Firefighters “searched through that entire hotel and weren’t able to find anything,” he said.

“We advised (the hotel) to keep an eye on things obviously,” he said.

The Sheraton hotel didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on Saturday.
