Fort Worth’s bike share will be free the first Friday of each month in 2020

If your New Year’s resolution involves working out more — or you just want free bike rides — you’re in luck in 2020.

Fort Worth Bike Sharing, as part of the Blue Zones wellness project, will make the city’s BCycle bikes free to rent on the first Friday of each month this year. Dubbed “First Fri-Yay” the program is designed to encourage bike riding and BCycle ridership.

“Not only is it a fun and convenient way to get around town, but it supports natural movement, social interaction and family time,” Jennifer Grissom, executive director of Fort Worth Bike Sharing said in a statement.

Bikes normally cost $8 for a 24-hour pass that provides unlimited 1-hour rides. Riders are charged $4 for each half hour after one hour. BCycle also offers 3-day, monthly and annual passes. Standard bikes, painted red, and electric assist bikes, painted white, are available.

Free First Fri-Yay BCycle day passes can be accessed at the bike share kiosks using the promo code 92020 or through the BCycle App with the code 92020APP. The app is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play. The codes eliminate the $8 day pass fee, but riders will be charged for overages after the first hour.

There are 46 BCycle stations, all inside Loop 820 and mostly dotted around downtown, the Cultural District and the Near Southside.

In 2019, cyclists rode 276,809 miles during 58,376 trips. That’s up from 229,490 miles in 2018. Last year’s rides burned more than 11 million calories and offset 263,483 pounds of carbon emissions.

A kickoff event is planned for from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday in Gateway Park, where the newest bike share station is at the east trailhead, 5400 E. 1st Street. Riders can bring their own bikes or reserve a free BCycle by registering online.
