Judge sentences Fort Worth man to 30 years for murder

After hearing testimony from the defendant and considering his criminal history, state District Judge Wayne Salvant sentenced a 31-year-old man Tuesday to 30 years in prison for killing one man and wounding another.

Daryl Lynn Jackson pleaded guilty this week to one count of murder and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Jackson elected to have Salvant sentence him, according to court records.

Jackson will have to serve half of his sentence before he becomes eligible for parole, an official with the Tarrant County district attorney’s office said.

Jackson shot Steven D. McCalister, 30, and Cedric Williams, 37, on Oct. 11, 2013, as they sat outside the Union Gospel Mission in the 2200 block of Chambers Street.

“Steven McCalister’s death was a senseless tragedy, and he left behind a grieving family,” including a 2-month-old daughter, prosecutor Tim Bednarz said.

Police have said Jackson got out of a car, and started arguing with McCalister. Jackson pulled a gun and fired, striking McCalister multiple times in the chest and abdomen.

McCalister was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on Oct. 12. Williams was taken by a private vehicle to a hospital where he was treated and released.

Tarrant County court records show that Jackson had previous convictions for drugs, theft and unlawful possession of a gun.
