Fallen Fort Worth Police Cpl. Garrett Hull’s name added to national memorial in D.C.

Members of Garrett Hull’s family and a contingent of police officers from Fort Worth will travel to Washington D.C. this weekend to honor Hull and other fallen officers during National Police Week.

Cpl. Hull was the seventh police officer in Texas to die in the line of duty last year.

Hull, 41, was shot on Sept. 14 by Dacion Steptoe, 23, one of three suspects he and other law enforcement officers were watching in connection with a string of armed robberies that had been occurring at Hispanic bars and cantinas throughout the summer, according to police.

While the surveillance team was watching the suspects, they saw the three men attempting a robbery. Law enforcement officials later identified Steptoe and his two accomplices as Timothy Huff and Samuel Mayfield, both 33.

Steptoe was shot by other law enforcement officers and pronounced dead. Huff and Mayfield were taken into custody and their trial dates are pending.

On April 23, state prosecutors filed a notice that they will seek the death penalty for both men.

Hillwood Airways, a private charter airline owned by the Perot Company, has partnered with the Fort Worth Police Department, Fort Worth Police Officers Association, and Brotherhood For The Fallen Fort Worth, Texas to coordinate the Washington, D.C. flight to honor Fort Worth’s fallen corporal.

The flight will take off from Fort Worth Alliance Airport at 11 a.m. Saturday with full honors being provided by local first responders.

Members of Cpl. Hull’s family, as well as friends and members of the Fort Worth Police Department will attend the 31st Annual Candlelight Vigil honoring country’s fallen first responders.

Local firefighters, paramedics, and police officers will line their vehicles along the runway and form an honor guard during the departure.

Hull served 17 years with the Fort Worth Police Department in the Special Response Team, the Narcotics Division, the Tactical Intelligence Division, and the FBI task force.
