Oklahoma man dies from injuries suffered at Rednecks with Paychecks event
An Oklahoma man has died from injuries he suffered in a head-on collision at a Rednecks with Paychecks off-road event in Montague County, authorities said Wednesday.
The victim, Steven Fairbairn, 25, of Duncan, Okla., was pronounced dead at 10:35 a.m. Saturday at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner.
A ruling on his death is pending.
Fairbairn was injured early Saturday at Rednecks with Paychecks Off-Road Spring Break 2019 at Farm Road 3206 near Saint Jo in Montague County. The event featured 1,200 acres mud pits, canyons, creek beds and rock courses for off-road vehicles, according to its website.
Fairbairn and a friend were in an ATV on their way to a restroom when a pickup collided with them, according to chief deputy Jack Lawson of the Montague County sheriff’s office.
Fairbairn’s friend suffered non-life threatening injuries. The pickup driver was not injured, Lawson said.
Montague County authorities continued to investigate on Wednesday.
WFAA Channel 8 reported that Fairbairn, who was originally from England, was attending his second Rednecks event in as many years. His fiancee, Abbey Green, told WFAA that Fairbairn had proposed to her two weeks ago with a ring that he bought in England while shopping with his mother.
A Rednecks official asked that questions be emailed. No one had responded to the questions by Wednesday afternoon.
Safety has been an issue at Rednecks events.
In 2015, Nicholas Torres, 10, of Fort Worth, was killed when his all-terrain vehicle crashed into a pickup at a campsite.
The next year, Stephanie Baldridge, of Crowley, died when the ATV she was riding flipped on top of her. Also in 2016, Jeff Sawyer, of Corinth, was killed when he crashed and his ATV landed on him.
