Man has life-threatening injuries after being shot outside Fort Worth store
A man was shot outside a Fort Worth convenience store on Tuesday and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, authorities say.
The man was shot about 11:50 a.m. after getting into an argument inside the store in the 5500 block of Bonnell Avenue on the northeast corner of Bonnell and Faron Street in the Como neighborhood, police said. The argument moved outside and the man was shot on the side of the store near the street corner, police said.
Store employee Quesha Brown, 30, was working behind the counter and said the victim was a man who had come to protect another employee from an irate customer. She said she knows both men.
The customer came to the store Tuesday morning holding a 20-ounce bottle of Dos Equis beer and became argumentative, she said.
He and the victim left the store, Brown said, and she could hear them arguing loudly through a metal door at the rear of the store.
“I heard one saying, ‘I’m gonna pop you,’ and the other saying, ‘I don’t (care),’” she said.
That’s when she heard multiple gunshots and ran from the store.
Brown said the victim was shot in the leg, chest and head.
Maria Luevano, 58, lives on the opposite side of Lake Como and said she was about a block north on Faron Street when she heard a loud argument and five shots fired, then saw several cars race away from the parking lot.
“It was a nice enough day that I could do my walk, and then (the shooting) just stopped me dead in my tracks,” she said.
Paramedics were called and took the wounded victim to John Peter Smith Hospital in critical condition, according to MedStar spokesman Matt Zavadsky.
Police said a suspect was arrested shortly before 1:30 p.m. about two blocks away on Goodman Avenue and was being interviewed by detectives.
Police blocked off the front of the store with tape and closed streets for a block in each direction near the intersection.
About a dozen residents gathered around the convenience store after the shooting but none said they’d witnessed it.
A late-model dark blue Chevrolet Silverado was parked on the side of the store with the passenger side window partially broken out and shattered.
Crime scene investigators were taking photographs of debris scattered around the truck, including a white sneaker on the ground near the driver’s side door, at 1:15 p.m.
