Will DFW see flash flooding, tornadoes this weekend? Here are the possibilities
Forecasters are once again calling for a wet weekend across the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Rain chances will begin Friday and continue into Saturday.
“We’re going to see our rain chances increasing,” National Weather Service meteorologist Jason Dunn said. ‘Right now our wettest day looks like Saturday. We could see anywhere from 1 to 3 inches across the Metroplex.”
Does that mean a repeat of the flash flooding Fort Worth saw two weeks ago that killed three people?
“It’s possible,” Dunn said. “We’ll have to keep an eye on that.”
Unlike the storm system two weeks ago, this one shouldn’t stall, but Dunn said “there’s going to be a lot of moisture” to fuel heavy rainfall.
This round of storms might also have a severe storm threat.
“We don’t have a feel yet for how bad it will be,” Dunn said. “It doesn’t look like a huge severe even but there could be a a few spin-up tornadoes. There’s a front coming down and where that front lays up will be a big player.”
There’s also a chance that North Texas could get its first taste of fall at the end of next week. Some forecast models have a strong cold front blowing through the area.
‘That’s more than a week out, so we don’t have a lot of confidence yet,” Dunn said. “The other model has the front coming through but not being quite as cool behind it.”
What seems to be clear is that it will be wetter than normal over the next two weeks.
The Climate Prediction Center is showing above average rainfall during the next 6-10 days.
