Condolences for fallen Fort Worth cop pour in from around the world on social media
People from across the United States and around the world watched the story of fallen Fort Worth police officer Garrett Hull unfold.
And when his death was announced Friday night, less than 24 hours after he was shot in the head while apprehending robbery suspects at a Los Vaqueros bar in south Fort Worth, condolences poured in on Twitter and Facebook.
Sympathy came from as far away as the United Kingdom:
“I’m not even American but this has broken my heart,” said Twitter user Duncan Day, who says he’s from the United Kingdom. “Sending all my love to Officer Hull’s colleagues from the UK. Stay strong guys.”
And from as near as the StoneWater Church in Granbury, which claimed Hull as a congregant:
“Pray for (Hull’s family) to experience God’s peace today as they grieve,” the church asked its followers.
The New York Police Department offered condolences via Twitter.
“On behalf of the men and women of the NYPD Community Affairs Bureau, I would like to express our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Officer Garrett Hull,” read a tweet from Chief Nilda Hofmann. “May he forever Rest In Peace.”
Democratic Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke shared the Star-Telegram’s story and wrote, “My thoughts are with the family of Fort Worth police officer Garrett Hull who died in the line of duty.”
Republican Sen. Ted Cruz hadn’t posted about Hull on two Facebook pages and two Twitter accounts with which he’s associated as of about 2 p.m. Saturday.
The initial tweet from Fort Worth police announcing Hull’s death was met with condolences from police departments and officials in Watauga, Colleyville, Irving, Huntsville, Lubbock, Gonzales, San Marcos and many others in Texas, along with departments and law enforcement organizations from Nebraska, Colorado, Florida and the United Kingdom, among others.
“We mourn with you and are lifting you guys up in prayer. We are here to assist y’all with whatever you need,” tweeted Colleyville police chief Michael Miller.
