2 drown in Fort Worth floodwaters
A woman in her mid 20s and her 2-year-old daughter drowned in a culvert filled with fast-moving floodwaters Saturday morning when their car was swept off the East Loop 820 access road near Wilbarger Street, a fire department spokesman said.
First responders also located an elderly man dead nearby about 2:30 p.m. after dive teams pulled his body from his submerged vehicle near South Cravens Road and Oakdale Drive.
Authorities did not immediately identify the victims, pending notification of next of kin.
The first drowning happened at about 10 a.m. in the 4900 block of East Loop 820.
Fort Worth police said that the car was stalled on the northbound service road and that passing vehicles created waves of water that pushed the car into the culvert.
Fire Department spokesman J.M. McAmis said the car was swept down into the culvert at 9:58 a.m. and by 10:01 a.m. it was completely submerged.
He said there was little to be done to help.
“When we got here the water was 30 feet deep and we couldn’t go in,” he said.
“There was nothing we could do, the current was too strong,” he said.
The woman and toddler were in a four-door sedan, he said.
Members of the victims’ family came to the scene, distraught, and left in the early afternoon.
The Tarrant County medical examiner was on the scene at about 1 p.m., McAmis said.
In the second incident, firefighters could not initially locate the elderly man who is believed to have also drowned, McAmis said.
Firefighters had been called by a witness about 11 a.m. who said a car had been washed away by high water, but firefighters were not able to find the vehicle because it was covered in water, McAmis said.
Once the water receded firefighters were called back to the area about 2:30 p.m. and were able to locate the vehicle because its top was visible, McAmis said. Divers were then sent in to recover the body, according to McAmis.
The rain is expected to taper off Saturday evening, the National Weather Service said, as the weather system shifts to the south. Sun should return to the Fort Worth area Sunday afternoon.
