A 22-year-old Texas man was crushed inside his SUV in Denton, police say

A 22-year-old man died after he was crushed inside his SUV when it was hit by another car on Sunday, according to Denton police.

At 12:16 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of Malone Street and West University Drive, where a Toyota SUV and a Ford sedan had been involved in a collision, Denton police spokesman Shane Kizer said in a news release.

The 22-year-old man was identified as Matthew Luedecke of Denton by the Tarrant County medical examiner's office.

Luedecke was driving the Toyota through the intersection when the Ford struck the driver's side of his vehicle, causing significant crushing damage, Kizer said.

Luedecke had to be extricated from the vehicle by members of Denton Fire and Rescue, then he was taken by Careflight to Medical City Denton. A little while later, he died from his injuries, Kizer said.

The driver of the Ford was a 27-year-old man who did not require any medical attention.

A preliminary investigation into the crash showed that the Ford was traveling west on West University Drive approaching the Malone Street intersection. Luedecke was traveling south on Malone Street in the Toyota and pulled into the intersection in front of the Ford, Kizer said.

The intersection was shut down while police investigated the crash, and traffic was diverted to connecting streets until 4:35 a.m.

The accident remains under investigation.
