Body found in park near Fort Worth elementary school
Hazel Harvey Peace Elementary School was temporarily shut down after a teacher found a man dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, in a nearby park Thursday morning.
The school reopened shortly after the incident was reported while police conducted an investigation, according to Clint Bond, Fort Worth school district spokesman.
The teacher, who has not been identified, alerted school office staff who called police and school security staff, Bond said.
The district locked down the school initially to control the children's movements as a precaution, and messages were distributed to parents to make them aware of what had occurred, Bond said.
"Counselors are available if anyone needs them, including parents who may want to talk to their children about this tragic event," Bond said.
No one reported hearing gunshots, but it is possible that students are aware that something happened, Bond said.
The school is at 7555 Trail Lake Drive in far south Fort Worth adjacent to Kingswood Park.
Police were dispatched to the school shortly before 11:40 a.m. to a shooting call, and the investigation is ongoing, according to authorities.
