Fort Worth firefighters rescue woman from balcony of burning house

Two men escaped from a house on fire early Monday in east Fort Worth and firefighters rescued a woman from a balcony, fire officials said.

One man, who ran out the front door, was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas for treatment of second-degree burns on his hands and smoke inhalation.

The second man jumped from the balcony of the two-story house in the 3300 block of Panola Avenue. He was taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth for treatment of an ankle injury and smoke inhalation.

Firefighters used a ladder to rescue the woman from the balcony. She also was taken to Harris hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

The fire was reported shortly after 12:30 a.m. Thirty-two firefighters brought the fire under control shortly before 1 a.m., Battalion Chief Richard Harrison said in a news release.

Next-door neighbor Jerry Moore said he awoke to the sound of a woman screaming for help.

“I ran outside and saw a cloud of smoke that nearly knocked me down,” Moore said. “Then I saw the house on fire.”

Moore said a husband and wife live in the house with a grandson.

Damage estimates were not available Monday morning, and the cause of the fire was still under investigation, Harrison said.
