Crowley students slightly injured in wreck of two buses, officials say

A Crowley school district bus rear-ended another bus Monday afternoon, slightly injuring several Summer Creek Middle School students, officials said.

The wreck occurred about 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of Summer Creek and Summer Park drives in far south Fort Worth.

One of the bus drivers stopped on Summer Creek Drive to “address a situation on the bus,” and that bus was hit by a second bus, Lt. Gregg Russell, a Fire Department spokesman, wrote in a statement.

The students are seventh- and eighth-graders.

A total of about 60 students were on both buses, district spokesman Anthony Kirchner said. At first, eight to 10 students reported minor injuries, such as cuts and bruises, he said. But eventually 23 students and the two drivers were transported to hospitals, MedStar spokeswoman Brett Lyle said. None of the injuries appeared serious, she said.

Fort Worth police said 10 to 12 students were injured. Fire officials said 31 children and two adults were taken to hospitals.

MedStar’s AMBUS, a bus-size ambulance that can transport as many as 15 patients, was sent to the scene, Lyle said.

“The bulk of the complaints and associated injures involve minor neck and back trauma,” Russell wrote.

Most of those hospitalized were taken to Cook Children’s Medical Center and John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Russell said.

Of the students who were not injured, many were picked up by parents and the rest were taken home by another school bus, Kirchner said.

Fort Worth police are investigating the crash, but no details were available Monday night, said officer Daniel Segura, a police spokesman.
