Suspect killed by Irving police was wanted for money laundering more than $150,000

A man killed by police after ramming a police car was wanted for money laundering over $150,000 in Hill County, authorities said late Tuesday.

Police identified the suspect as Aaron O. Candanoza, 28, of Cleveland, Texas.

Candanoza was shot and killed by a police officer early Monday after he rammed a police car and several other vehicles.

Detectives have learned that Candanoza was wanted in Hill County for money laundering over $150,000. He also had a warrant for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon in Liberty County.

Officers were dispatched about 1 a.m. Monday to a report of a man breaking into a vehicle in a parking lot in the 3200 block of Finley Road.

When officers arrived, Candanoza got into a pickup and hit a police car and other vehicles as he attempted to drive away.

An officer fired at Candanoza because he feared for his life, authorities said.

Candanoza was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, where he died.

No officers or residents were injured.

Police did not release the name of the officer, but authorities said he was on administrative leave with pay.

"He is afforded time to decompress, come in and provide the required statements," police spokesman James McLellan said Wednesday in an email. "And also to see a psychologist before returning to full duty."

McLellan said the officer who joined the force in 2015 has not been involved in any other shootings.
