Police appealed for help Thursday in identifying a woman who gave birth to a child last month and then discarded the baby in a dumpster.

A resident later found the infant dead Dec. 30 in the dumpster in the 200 block of Chamberlain Street.

Initial medical tests indicated the baby was born alive.

"The detective wants to withhold that information," Det. James McLellan said in a Thursday email when asked about the ethnic background of the newborn. "The detective is trying to cast a wide net."

Detectives had located a possible suspect in the case, but DNA test results showed that she was not the baby's mother.

Police were alerted to the discovery about 3:30 p.m. Dec. 30 in the dumpster at the Senter Park East Building.

Anyone with information should call police at 972-273-1010 and reference case number 17-29109. Additional tips can be submitted to ipdcrimetips@cityofirving.org.
