Man who fakes injury on street carjacks Texas good Samaritan
A good Samaritan was carjacked early Monday after he stopped to help a man who fell in front of his car, only to have the suspect punch him and brandish a handgun.
The suspect took the man's 2007 Chrysler 300 and fled.
The good Samaritan walked to a nearby residence, where he called police.
Authorities found the car Monday night in Dallas occupied by a man and a woman, but police say the couple did not match the description of the carjacker in Terrell. Detectives are trying to determine how they came to have the stolen car and whether they had any connection to the carjacking.
Police responded to the carjacking call shortly after 4 a.m. Monday on South Rockwall Avenue.
A man told police he was traveling south when the man walked out in front of his vehicle and fell. He said he stopped immediately, rolled down the window and checked on the man, who was lying on the street.
"The victim stated that after rolling down his window, he heard the man moaning and groaning as if he was injured," police Capt. A.D. Sansom said in a Tuesday news release.
The victim got out of his car and walked over to the man, police said, but as he approached the suspect got up, hit him in the stomach and waved a handgun.
"The victim fell to the ground believing that he was going to be shot," Sansom said.
The suspect, who did not fire the gun, got into the man's car and drove away, police said.
Police gave these safety tips for those who might encounter a similar situation:
Do not attempt to contact the possibly injured person. Remain in your vehicle with the doors and windows locked and immediately call 911.
If surprised, give up your vehicle or belongings without a fight.
If possible, flee and honk the horn.
