Two men trying to ride across river on ATVs nearly drown

Two men ended up clinging to their upside-down ATVs in the West Fork of the Trinity River Thursday night after they attempted to ride across the water, first responders said.

When the all-terrain vehicles flooded with water, the two were swept downstream, Lt. Kyle Falkner, a fire department spokesman, wrote in a news release.

One man called 911 from a cell phone about 6 p.m., Falkner said.

Firefighters had to hike about a mile to reach the men. A diver swam to the men with two life jackets, and then the three were dragged to shore by a rope pulled by firefighters on land, Falkner said.

The incident was roughly in the 3400 block of High River Road in far east Fort Worth.

Back on land, MedStar crews assessed their condition. They were not injured, a MedStar spokesman said. — Monica S. Nagy
