Suspect wounded after exchanging gunfire with police, deputy on freeway service road

A suspect and authorities exchanged gunfire early Sunday on a freeway service road after a traffic stop erupted into a shooting.

The suspect was hit in the wrist and thigh in the gunfire, and he was taken to a local hospital where he was in custody, police said. Police listed his condition as stable.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

The shooting occurred in the 9100 block of Interstate 30 or the West Freeway on the service road.

Police responded to the scene to assist a deputy with the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office who had stopped a vehicle with several people inside of it. The deputy had recognized them from a previous call. Police did not provide any details on that previous call.

When they arrived, police began taking passengers out of the vehicle when one of them refused to cooperate, police said.

"It is believed the subject had his hands in his pocket and refused to take them out of the pocket," Officer Brad Perez said in a Sunday email.

At some point, the suspect pulled out a .45-caliber pistol and began firing at officers, police said.

Officers and the deputy drew their weapons and fired back, Perez said.
